In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
